Kitchen and WC clean up completed, plus a couple finds

Cleaning and organizing the kitchen and water closet went buy relatively quickly.  I’m not sure if it was because I spent longer blocks of time here with less distractions or if it’s because the space is only half the size of the store.  Either way it’s done and over with and I’m ready to move upstairs. This whole clean up thing is really starting to get old.

The almighty Bathroom / Pharmacy

With the Store about 99% done, I’m moving on to the next area which is the “Kitchen” and Water Closet. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen.  As if the people who lived here just up and left.

There are a couple shelves above the toilet containing a plethora of prescriptions, hygiene, and beauty products all dating from 1950’s-60’s.  It’s amazing. […]

One room, one week, four bags of garbage, ultimate finds!

I have to admit, at first glance and going back to my original walk thru video, I thought there would have been more trash thrown out.  I swear I’m being more vigilant here than even at my own home where not every bit of recyclable material makes it to the bin.  My first two bags were just a bit of everything because I couldn’t even find a place to keep sorted materials.  Eventually I found […]

Peeling paint textures and the sort

If you’re just visiting this blog for the first time or you’re not from my small town where everyone knows everybody and their dog’s name, you may not be able to tell from my mediocre iPhone photos throughout the blog, that I’m actually a professional photographer.  I’m also not a professional journalist if you can tell from that huge run on sentence.

I was really dying to get some texture into this blog and 49 Columbia is loaded with textures, toxic lead paint and all!  My previous background was just a free stock pic that had nothing to do with the property, but alas, I spent about 30 minutes walking around the interior of the house documenting the textures along the way with my 100mm macro lens on my Canon 5DmkII (I have a couple Mark III’s but didn’t want to bring them into the depths of hell)

So if you’ve stopped by here a few times in the last couple days, you might have noticed the changing background.  Thanks to my brother-in-law, Shawn, for setting up this theme and doing all the nit-picky stuff I think of.  Just like having a custom code to randomize the 40+ photos I took for the background.

Below is a gallery of the 42 high resolution versions for all the artists and creatives out there.
Free downloads, may they be put to good use!

What is it? #2

Another odd find today, rather, multiple finds.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this, though you should know that the small circle slides from left to right and acts as an adjustment for the spacing of the two points at the “C” shape end.

What is it?
What is it?

Check out all of these… things.

—Update 5/9/14—

So I found an accomplice to the mystery item.  Like most things in America, they tend to get cheaper and more disposable as they evolve.  I’ve also included a ruler for reference as to help identify it’s true purpose.

I can see it, the place is taking shape.
I can feel it.  The warmth and light coming in from the newly opened windows.

Thumbs up.

How to put up temportary sheeting over a window frame

I really think this day was the most exciting so far.  The progress was remarkable and I can really feel the zen starting to kick in.  Most of all, I can see in the place!

One of the two boarded up windows was opened again, showering the place with some nice morning sun on the eastern facing front of the building.  I did this at […]

Can I clean this place “green”?

3 May

Finally, the question I’ve been asking myself since I first bought this place; “Can I empty this place and rebuild ‘Green’?”

Store workbench
Does all of this have to go in a landfill?

I’ve set a personal goal to clear the contents of the place as “green” as possible.  I’ve only filled two garbage bags so far and that was only to give myself some breathing room.  I literally wasn’t even walking on the floors there was so much stuff.  Now that I can start micro visualizing cleaning this place, I need to create an area out back that can store some bins.  One for each material; plastic, metal, glass, & wood.  These bins will be emptied at the transfer station less than a mile  away.  Anything that had to be bagged and trashed, will.  Things that I can sell, donate, or reuse, will.

This blog is a community page, everyone so far has nothing but good things to say and best wishes for the project, so I’m asking everyone of you to step up and help make this a “green” cleaning.  Any advice is greatly appreciated. Please leave your suggestions and comments below.
